During the excavation of the Domus Aurea in the last years Ms Dr. Parizia Albertano, an Italian scientist at the University of Rome, discovered a bacteria culture which is responsible for destroying the frescos found there. These bacteria, called Leptolyngbya have the tendency to move towards the light. In my project these bacteria will be cultivated and than photo negatives of the frescos from the Domus Aurea will be projected onto the bacterial cultures. As a result, the bacteria grew and aligned themselves to those spots that receive light.
As a living medium following the laws of biology and dependent on light, the bacteria arranged themselves to form an image.
The bacteria, which are destroying the “original” site, become active participants in a constructive process. This destructive medium is changed and used to create new imagery.
